MOST INFLUENTIAL ALBUM
ROOM FOR SQUARES | JOHN MAYER
I found this record when I was in middle school and it completely molded what I understood songwriting and guitar playing to be. At that time I was completely entranced. I was already playing guitar but it was this record that inspired me to want to weave guitar parts and songwriting into one thing. Every song had its own guitar part and an amazing melody and lyric on top of that. It was a triple threat. It was a dangerous mixture that made me obsessed with guitar and singing and songwriting. This record and John still inspire me to this day to be chasing a certain level of elegance with music. Making music/songs that sound simple but that is built on complex chords or interesting musical choices that make it stand out from the everyday pop song. It’s hard to pick a favorite song on that record. It is always changing. Depends on the day, depends on the time of year, and depends on what life phase. I’m Room for Squares freak. Let’s talk about it.
